Conceptual diagram of the cost effectiveness analysis. Individuals enter the simulation model and are assigned to one of two strategies for antibiotic therapy. The model estimates the impact of indicated vs. routine antibiotic therapy on mortality and cost outcomes. The tradeoffs between life years saved (LYS) and costs are evaluated by calculating an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for indicated antibiotic therapy compared to routine antibiotic therapy
